Woman charged after man found stabbed in burning Toronto apartment

Man found with stab wounds in burning building A man is in hospital fighting for his life after he was found with stab wounds inside a burning apartment building in downtown Toronto.

A 29-year-old woman is facing charges after a man was found with stab wounds in a burning apartment in downtown Toronto Friday morning.

Emergency crews responded to a fire at Sherbourne and Shuter streets, around 11:20 a.m., according to a Toronto Police Service (TPS) release.

TPS allege a fight had broken out between a woman and the victim when the woman stabbed the victim and set fire to the home.

Toronto Fire told CP24 Friday that when they arrived at 155 Sherbourne Street, heavy smoke billowed from the fifth floor. They added that crews entered one of the units on that floor and rescued two people from the apartment, with one found out on the balcony at the time.

The fire was quickly doused.

Police say the victim was taken to the hospital with serious, non-life-threatening injuries. They add the woman was arrested shortly after the incident.

Police did not disclose the relationship, if any, between the woman and victim.

In a release issued Saturday, police say they charged Nakitha Smith with aggravated assault and two counts of arson. The charges have not been tested in court.
