SUDBURY -- A 44-year-old Sudbury man is facing child pornography charges after police in Sudbury received a tip from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

Earlier this month, the Mounties informed Greater Sudbury Police's Internet child exploitation unit that someone in Sudbury was distributing child porn using a chat messaging service.

The man was arrested June 10 in Greater Sudbury and is now charged with possession and distribution of child pornography.

"He appeared in bail court on June 10 to answer to the charges," police said in a news release Thursday. "A publication ban was ordered by the justice of the peace prohibiting any details of the investigation from being released."

Greater Sudbury is part of the Ontario provincial strategy to protect children from sexual abuse and exploitation on the Internet, which has been made possible by a grant from the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services and the Ministry of the Attorney General.
