SUDBURY -- Timmins residents John Spalding, Carol Denis and Lucas Denis, won $258,892 in the Timmins Area District Hospital Foundation’s October 50/50 lottery.

The draw took place electronically Oct. 30 at 11 a.m. and Lucas was contacted immediately.

He got the call while out doing errands and said he was “super surprised.”

His mom, Carol, came up with the idea for the three to join in on buying tickets to improve their chances of wining, the Timmins Area Hospital said in a news release Wednesday.

"Lucas called his mom Carol first who thought she was being pranked and needed proof of the win," the release said. "In the spirit of Halloween, Lucas also pulled a fast one on his employer -- he told them he had some serious news to share. Then he unveiled the great news about his group winning October’s hospital lottery. There was a lot of cheering in the west end of Timmins that day."

Lucas said he will be putting the funds toward building his nest egg. Carol has been a bus driver for over 35 years and will continue the job she loves and pay a few bills. When John got the call from Carol, he was pleasantly surprised. The construction said he worker plans to pay off his truck and a few bills.

On draw days, Jason Laneville, executive director of the Timmins and District Hospital Foundation gathers, staff together to call the lucky winner.

“It really is the best part of our job," Laneville said. "I could only imagine what it’s like being on the other side of that call.”
