TIMMINS -- Curling Canada announced Tuesday the McIntyre Curling Club in Timmins is next in line to host the 2021 Canadian Under-18 Championships.

This year’s event was supposed to be held in Sudbury, before it and all sporting events were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Postponed to Feb. 7 next year, Leslie Kerr, the executive director of the Northern Ontario Curling Association, said it will be a chance to welcome the country’s top young curlers to the North.

“The Canadian Under-18 Championships are an amazing opportunity for curling fans to see our future Canadian, world and Olympic champions, and we’re thrilled that Timmins will have the opportunity to host this event,” Kerr said in a release.

“I know that the City of Timmins and the McIntyre Curling Club will provide the teams and fans with a great Northern Ontario experience.”

The tournament will expand from 17 to 27 teams to accommodate those that could not compete in 2020.
