SUDBURY -- There were some tense moments in Timmins Thursday after police were called to an apartment building on a landlord-tenant matter and ended up finding explosive materials in one of the units.

Materials found included a blasting cap and evidence of dismantled ammunition.

The building, located on Balsam Street North, was evacuated and Ontario Provincial Police's explosive disposal unit was called in. It is described as a house split into units, rather than a large apartment complex.

Provincial officers arrived around 9 p.m. and were able to safely seize, contain and dispose of the explosive devices.

"As part of the investigative process undertaken by the Timmins Police, a search warrant was executed at the Balsam Street building where explosive devices, firearms, ammunition, and suspected stolen property was located and seized as evidence," said police in a news release Friday morning.

The matter remains under investigation by the local criminal investigations division, but the residence and immediate area have been released by police.
