SUDBURY -

After what Timmins police say was a thorough investigation, officers have determined that allegations of a reported sexual assault currently receiving significant attention online are unfounded.

The alleged incident was reported to police Nov.23 and was said to have taken place in South Porcupine.

The TPS Criminal Investigations Division concluded the allegations were not only unfounded but have since issued a public advisory reminding users about the spread of misinformation.

"The Timmins Police Service has determined that there is no validity to the initial allegation and deem this investigation to be a closed matter requiring no further police action," read a media release issued Friday morning.

"As always, the Timmins Police Service recommends that any posts on social media from non-accredited sources should be viewed as unconfirmed speculation."
