Timmins Police investigate weekend stabbing incidents

Timmins police investigated two separate stabbing incidents over the weekend.

One involved a young person on Friday, while the other happened near the Living Space homeless shelter.

Police responded to Spruce Street South on Saturday around 7 p.m. They said two people who knew each other got into a verbal dispute that escalated to the point one stabbed the other.

Police said it’s still under investigation.

Cochrane District Social Services, which operates the shelter, sent this statement to CTV News:

“The DSSAB recognizes the significant impact of the quick response and life-saving services from TPS and our emergency medical services across the city. We want to acknowledge the immediate and life-saving action taken by the Mushkegowuk Fire Keepers, who swiftly responded to the situation, removed the victim from harm, and promptly called 911.”

The second stabbing took place in the Balsam Street North and Sixth Avenue area at around 10 p.m.

“Police responded to a call of a disturbance -- a female bleeding on the street,” said Staff Sgt. Mike Fortin with the Timmins Police Service.

“Upon police arrival, it was determined that a verbal dispute had taken place between two people in the residence in that area that led to one of them being injured by a knife.”

Fortin said a young person was arrested and charged with various weapons offences. The victim suffered non-life threatening wounds and was treated in hospital.

“The concern is that they're violent in nature and they involve weapons, but both of these incidents are between people that are known to each other,” said Fortin.

He said Timmins platoons are fully staffed and officers are expected to conduct extra checks in areas that seem to have more incidents involving police.
