TIMMINS -- For 17 years, the Movember movement has continued to grow.  It started in Australia and is now raising millions of dollars around the world for men's health.

Growing moustaches is one way to bring attention to the initiative and this year, there are several other ways to make the month a fun one.

Two men in the Timmins area say it's been a good way for them to open up and talk about issues affecting men such as mental health and cancer.

Fireman, paramedic and family man, Dan Knight is ramping up his Movember fundraising efforts this year.

Over the last nine years, he's raised around three-hundred dollars for Movember, and this year, he's having more success.

He's growing a moustache, and he's also jumping in Barbers Bay, the lake in front of his house, every time someone sponsors him a hundred dollars.  He posts the proof on his Facebook page.

"My wife thought I was crazy when I mentioned the idea, but on Nov. 1, it was snowing, it was not a nice day and I was just like 'get your phone, let's go'," said Knight.

He's done half a dozen jumps so far, but has many more to do since he's now surpassed the eleven-hundred dollar mark.

"Everybody's been affected by cancer somehow; and last year we lost our nephew to suicide and Movember helps raise awareness for that," he said. "If I can raise awareness and I can help anyone, anyway possible ... I'm all for that."

'Mo Bros' Vincent Gauthier is a university student.  He's also working on his 'stache' and getting outside for daily walks.

He and seven of his friends have collectively garnered around $400 through their online 'Mo Space' account.

"I personally struggle with anxiety and my own variety of health issues so for me it was the first time really being open about it with a lot of people and that's helped me in my own journey, with getting the confidence to you know try to beat it," said Gauthier.

Over the years, money raised by Movember participants have helped fund research for prostate cancer drugs and launched new counselling initiatives for men.
