Timmins lawyer being investigated for misconduct

An assistant Crown attorney in Timmins is facing a Law Society Tribunal related to allegations of misconduct.
In a post dated Nov. 23, the Law Society of Ontario said Gerrit Wolbertus Verbeek faces the tribunal to determine “whether (he has) contravened s. 33 by engaging in professional misconduct.”
The allegations date between November 2018 and January 2023.
“In his capacity as an assistant Crown attorney, (he is alleged to have) engaged in discriminatory conduct and/or harassment against Indigenous accused persons,” the post said.
Verbeek is also accused of failing to provide legal services to the standard of a competent lawyer, failing to act honourably as a prosecutor and encourage public respect for the administration of justice.
A message to the law society seeking more details of the allegations and a date for the hearing was not returned by publication time.
None of the allegations has been proven in court.
