Timmins girl awaiting tumour removal now has nurse practitioner
Two days after CTV News Northern Ontario ran a story about a 12-year-old Timmins girl who has been waiting months for tumour surgery, the local MPP says she has been assigned a nurse practitioner.
After being contacted by CTV News, Timmins MPP George Pirie's office provided an update on the situation Thursday morning.
"We contacted the Timmins Family Health Team and Paige Roberge was assigned a nurse practitioner to look after her in the same capacity as a family physician now and after the surgery. As for the surgery, were still working through our contacts at the ministry on the situation," Matthieu Quirion, Pirie's executive assistant, said in an email.
On Tuesday, Brittany Roberge shared her story about repeated delays her daughter Paige has been facing in removing a large tumour near her kidney, highlighting the current state of Ontario's health care system.
After doctors in Timmins discovered the growth in May, Paige was referred to Toronto's SickKids Hospital and was told it needed to be removed within the month.
The hospital told her the surgery has been delayed for the last five months due to a lack of post-recovery beds, Roberge said.
Without a family doctor -- a common occurrence in northern Ontario due to an ongoing shortage that predates the pandemic -- Roberge said she is concerned that her daughter has been left without follow-up care to avoid further complications and health impacts.
