On Thursday, the Timmins Police Service Board announced that Darren Dinel is the new deputy chief of police.

"After a rigorous and comprehensive selection process, Darren has been appointed to this key leadership role, effective immediately," the board said in a news release Thursday.

Dinel, a member of the Timmins Police Service since 1999, has held a number of leadership positions throughout his career, most recently serving as acting deputy chief of police since November 2023.

He was also the inspector in charge of the support services division.

"His experience, commitment to public service, and deep knowledge of the community and its policing needs were all instrumental in the board’s unanimous decision," the release said.

"Darren Dinel has demonstrated exceptional leadership and dedication during his tenure as acting deputy chief,” board chair Kraymr Grenke said in the release.

"His appointment is a reflection of his outstanding work and the confidence we have in his ability to continue to lead the service forward, working alongside the leadership team."

Planning is underway for an official appointment ceremony.
