There’s a new petition online asking for signatures to rename Sudbury's main library, in honour of Alex Trebek,  but it’s not an easy process

With Trebek’s recent announcement that he has stage 4 pancreatic cancer  , hundreds of people have signed a petition to change this library’s name.

Some people who haven't signed it yet, think it’s a good idea...

"I personally grew up with Alex Trebek. He’s never been in any kind of scandal, never been in the media for anything negative..I think it's a great idea actually."

"Yeah i think it would be like a great way to honour him, especially because he's from Sudbury."

Staff with the public library say, they heard about this petition on social media, which caught them off guard but say they aren't opposed to the idea...

"I think it's a cool thing, himself as a personality and what he's done, you know, there's something to be proud of having someone like that. being from Sudbury and move onto have an amazing career like that and again unfortunately with his illness and all that it's on a lot of people's minds in Sudbury right now so it'll be neat to see how things pan out, "  said Pierre Dubuc  of the Greater Sudbury Public Library

Changing the name of a municipal building isn't as easy as everyone may think it is...

Before the idea can even be presented to the city, there are some steps this group will have to go through...

"The family of the person you want to name the facility after, has to agree to that. So in this case, we would need to be in contact with or the group would have to be in contact with the Trebek family uh and get there approval to go forward with this process," said Mike Jakabo, Sudbury City Councillor.

And it doesn't stop there...

Jakubo says "if there was approval of the family and there was enough public interest the group could  bring it forward to city council, there is a public consultation that does have to be initiated."

And,  following those steps, staff would need to bring a report and present it to city council for approval.
