A northern Ontario man is dead after a crash involving a commercial vehicle and SUV on Highway 144 on Wednesday in the Cartier area north of Sudbury, police say.

Emergency crews were called to the scene south of Cartier shortly before 2:30 p.m. Feb. 14, Ontario Provincial Police said in a news release Thursday morning.

The SUV driver, a 55-year-old man from Cartier, was pronounced dead at the scene and the commercial driver was taken to hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries after the crash.

"Highway 144 was closed in both directions for under 14 hours during the investigation, removal and clean up of the vehicles," OPP said.

The road reopened around 4:30 a.m. Thursday.

No word on the cause of the crash or if any charges are pending.

"OPP collision reconstructionist and members of the traffic collision investigation team attended the scene and will continue to assist Nipissing West OPP officers with the investigation, as it is still ongoing," police said.
