In Timmins, the local MP, Charlie Angus of the NDP, held his year-end news conference Tuesday.

He was talking about what he feels he was able to accomplish in 2018 and also looked ahead to next year.

Angus spoke about economic uncertainty in northeastern Ontario as a result of the new U.S. Mexico Canada Agreement, but said he is encouraged by recent investments in the mining sector.

The Timmins-James Bay MP says getting Ottawa to establish a national suicide prevention strategy remains a priority in 2019.

“The suicide crisis is across the board. It's not just in the Indigenous community, it's all across Canada. And we've been working with a lot of organizations we've got mobilized. We will be bringing this to a vote in Parliament in the New Year. So, we're hoping that before Parliament rises for the election, that we will actually have a commitment to a suicide action plan.” said Angus.

Angus says he's also encouraged to hear that the new Timmins mayor, George Pirie, is establishing a committee to look at homeless issues in the city.

He also says he will definitely run for re-election as the Timmins-James Bay MP in the October 2019 federal election.
