The team’s new head coach is Scott Barney – he was the coach of the Humboldt Broncos for the past six seasons, rebuilding the team following the infamous bus crash in 2018.
“It was an unfortunate tragedy that we had to deal with and you know that it’s an amazing community there in Humboldt,” said Barney.
“I learned a lot about myself as a person and as a coach which is going to help me in return to lead these young men to success here in Sudbury.”
Barney played in both the OHL and NHL as well as participating in professional hockey overseas.
Officials with the Sudbury Wolves told CTV News there was a thorough and intense search, with over 40 applicants from all over the world vying for the position of head coach, before Barney was hired to lead the team bringing with him many winning qualities.
“He just relates to players he teaches,” said Wolves general manager Rob Papineau.
“The guys buy in they want to go through a wall for him. Accountability matters to him … He has dealt with a lot of adversity and bringing that team (Humboldt Broncos) back.”
Wolves owner Dario Zulich said he is very excited about what the team is doing right now.
“We consciously are spending more time and more energy in finding the right people to assure that we can lead these young boys to a successful season and program,” he said.
Another coach has also rejoined the Wolves’ den – Michael Lawrence has been named the team’s new goaltending coach.
Lawrence was part of the Sudbury Wolves coaching staff during the 2006-2007 season.
“This is kinda where things started when I was 25 young you know first-time coach and Mike Foligno gave me the opportunity to work with the Wolves way back when,” he said.
“You know we had that great run and went to the finals that year with Sebastian Dahm as our goalie so it’s just a coming home kind of story.”
The Wolves said the two new coaches will hit the hit with players for training camp on Aug. 26.
The home opener is set for Sept. 27 with the puck dropping at 7:05 p.m. against the Barrie Colts.
