Sudbury veterans’ monument to be refurbished
The Irish Regiment of Canada monument located on Brady Street in Greater Sudbury’s Memorial Park will be under construction for about one week beginning Monday.
Memorial Park is located downtown and features include a playground and water fountain alongside memorials to Canada’s fallen and veterans.
The monument’s current plaque will be removed and refinished before being attached to a new memorial that is to be constructed on the same site. The regiment is aiming for completion of the project – including the installation of the plaque – by the end of the week.
“We just want to ensure that the community is aware of the project,” said Lieutenant-Colonel Kirk Langdon, Commanding Officer of The Irish Regiment of Canada, in a news release on Friday.
“(So) that they don’t misinterpret this revitalization effort as vandalism or other damage.”

The 2nd Battalion, Irish Regiment of Canada is an infantry regiment in Sudbury. It originated in Toronto in 1915 and was designated the 110th Irish Regiment.
It was redesignated The Irish Regiment of Canada in 1940 and in 1965, it amalgamated with the 58th (Sudbury) Field Artillery Regiment, RCA and the artillery unit was converted to infantry to make up the current-day Irish Regiment of Canada.
“The unit trains year-round for missions in Canada like emergency response operations during natural disasters like floods and wildfires,” said military officials in the news release.
“(The unit) provides the regular force with trained and professional soldiers for overseas deployments in support of international partners and allies.”
