SUDBURY -- Officials at Health Sciences North say thanks to the impressive response of health-care staff and the public, Sudbury has completed more COVID-19 tests per capita than Ontario or Canada as a whole.

Locally, about 10,200 tests have been done out of a population of 207,004, a rate of 4,927 tests per 100,000 people. That compares to Ontario's rate of 4,122 tests per 100,000 and Canada's rate of 3,851.

"Let's keep it up," tweeted hospital CEO Dominic Giroux this week.

The last confirmed case in the Sudbury district was discovered May 14 at 8:15 p.m. Out of all the tests performed locally, 64 have been positive and all 64 have been resolved as of May 25 at 5 p.m. Two people have died from the virus, and there are 204 test results currently pending.

In a statement Tuesday, HSN spokesperson Jason Turnbull said partnerships were key in mobilizing the community once the pandemic hit.

"It’s something we are very proud of," Turnbull said.

He credited the work of HSN's COVID-19 Assessment Centre, staff and physicians, "as well as our close collaboration with Public Health Sudbury and Districts, NEOMO Medical, the Primacy Medical Centre, the City of Lakes Family Health Team, other hospitals and partners."

"This is also thanks to the fact that the public has listened to the advice from public health officials to call the assessment centre for an appointment if they have any of the symptoms for COVID-19," Turnbull said in the statement.

"While the rate of testing is something to celebrate, the reality is we have the capacity to test hundreds of more people. No one who is symptomatic or who is concerned they have been exposed to COVID-19 will be declined a test at the Assessment Centre."

"Testing is also available for people who are concerned that they have been exposed to COVID-19."

Residents who should consider getting tested includes people who may have been exposed to a confirmed or suspected case, and people who are at risk through their jobs, including essential workers such as health-care staff, grocery store employees and people who work at food processing plants.

To arrange a test, call 705-671-7373 to make an appointment at one of the three assessment centres in Sudbury. Walk-ins are prohibited due to safety reasons.

Correction:

An earlier version of this story incorrectly said HSN has tested more people per capita than anywhere in Canada. In fact, Thunder Bay has a higher testing rate (5,881/per 1000,000), while Sudbury exceeds the provincial and national testing rates.
