SUDBURY -- An 18-year-old from Sudbury riding a motorcycle led police in Verner on a chase Saturday morning, and was taken into custody after being pursued by a police drone and the K9 unit.

The chase began at 10:15 a.m. Aug. 22, when the Nipissing West Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police tried to stop a motorcycle travelling more than 170 km/h in a posted 90 km/h zone on Highway 17 in Verner.

The driver failed to stop and fled. Officers continued to patrol the area and subsequently located the motorcycle, abandoned at the dead-end of Leclair Road in Verner.

The OPP K9 unit, emergency response team and the remotely piloted aircraft system were deployed to search for the motorcyclist. At 11:35 a.m., the K9 unit located the suspect hiding in the bush and he was arrested. The driver was not injured.

As a result of the investigation, the 18-year-old driver, from Sudbury, was charged with failing to stop for police, stunt driving, careless driving, using a plate not authorized for the vehicle, driving without a permit and driving without insurance.

The accused is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice on Oct. 26 in Sturgeon Falls.
