Sudbury student injured in collision with vehicle Thursday
A 14-year-old student received non-life-threatening injuries Thursday afternoon in a collision with a vehicle in Chelmsford in Greater Sudbury.
Ontario Provincial Police said the incident took place around noon near the intersection of Highway 144 and Edward Avenue.
"OPP reminding students/pedestrians to pay attention while crossing a busy highway," police said in a news release.
"The student was assessed by Sudbury Paramedic Services and transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries."
Police are reminding students from Chelmsford Valley District Composite School "to pay attention while crossing Highway 144 near Edward Avenue."
Students are urged to make eye contact with the driver before they cross and ensure they are seen.
"Wear bright, light-coloured clothing or reflective strips, especially in low-light or dark conditions," police said.
"Avoid jaywalking. Obey pedestrian signals and only cross at marked crosswalks and intersections. Watch for vehicles turning at intersections or backing out of (the) driveway."
Students and all pedestrians are urged to be aware of their surroundings and stay off devices such as cellphones when crossing the road.
"Avoid distractions, like texting or wearing earphones (and) no horseplay," the OPP said.

Drivers in the area should always look for pedestrians, especially when turning.
"Watch for children/youths across roads or darting out between cars," the release said.
"Drive slowly and cautiously through school zones, residential areas, or any other area where children/teens could be walking or playing. Be patient towards pedestrians with disabilities. Youth/seniors need more time to cross."
