SUDBURY -- Sudbury Rocks marathon changing its traditional date

A big change is in the works with Northern Ontario’s largest foot race, the Sudbury Rocks marathon is moving from its traditional Mother’s Day date to later in May.

Organizers held the official media launch in the lobby of the Northeast Cancer Centre Feb. 4, and they say they’ll be holding the race on May.31, 2019.

“Hopefully we have a little warmer weather for the runners, the walkers and the volunteers,” said race director Brent Walker. “We’re delighted to have almost 2,000 people come out to our event every year.”

Walker says it’s the smiles of the runners that cross the finish line that make it all worthwhile.

The Northern Cancer Research Foundation will be the sole recipient of the funds raised.

“I think as several of our speakers said today, let’s run cancer out of town and we can do that with people who pledge money through the cancer foundation in Sudbury Rocks,” said executive director Tannys Laughren. “All of the dollars raised stay here in the cancer centre to support local patient care, equipment, research and our incredible team that’s here at the cancer centre.”

Laughren says the fact that the PET scanner is here, is a testament to their saying that every dollar raised here, stays here.

This year will mark the 15th anniversary of the race.
