Sudbury police seize more than $550K in drugs in raid of illegal cannabis products manufacturer
SUDBURY -- A 47-year-old man is facing charges after police raided an address in Val Caron where cannabis products were being manufactured illegally.
The total value of items seized is more than $660,000, including about $550,000 in marijuana.
Greater Sudbury Police received a tip Sept. 13 about the operation, including the address and that products were being made there in contravention of the Cannabis Act Legislation.
"An investigation was commenced by members of the Greater Sudbury Police Service drug enforcement unit, as well as OPP Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau officers," police said in a news release Friday. "A Cannabis Act Search Warrant was applied for and granted for police to attend and search the property. The search warrant was executed by the investigators on Sept. 14."
Items seized include $556,515 in cannabis product, $585 in cash, $42,139 in production and distribution equipment and $61,388 in food supplies, police said.
In court Dec. 9
The Val Caron man is scheduled to appear in court Dec. 9, and is facing charges of possession of property obtained by crime, illegal cannabis possession and producing illegal cannabis.
"Although cannabis possession and production has been legalized, it is regulated and it has always remained a criminal offence to produce, sell, distribute, import/export and use cannabis outside of the parameters of both the provincial and federal legislation, specifically the Cannabis Act," police said in the release.
"Police would like to remind the public that the only place to purchase cannabis edibles legally is through outlets licenced by the province or the provincial Online Cannabis Store. The illegal cannabis product operations are not regulated by the Health Unit and have no quality control mechanisms.
"They could be made in an area lacking proper hygiene and safe food handling procedures, resulting in unsafe edibles."
