A suspect driving a Pontiac G6 sedan fled from police in Sudbury on July 14. Further investigation revealed the same vehicle was spotted in several gas thefts in the city beginning in June.

The most recent incident took place just after 2:50 p.m. on Larch Street downtown when police noticed the vehicle had unattached plates.

“Once on David Street, the officer initiated the emergency lights on the marked police cruiser to conduct a traffic stop, however, the driver of the vehicle did not stop and sped away at a high speed,” police said in a news release Thursday.

“Out of a concern for public safety, the officer did not pursue the vehicle.”

A database search soon uncovered that the vehicle was involved in several gas thefts between June 21 and July 14.

The Pontiac has since been recovered abandoned in southern Ontario.

Police have released images of the suspect and the vehicle in hopes someone will recognize him.

The driver is just under six feet tall, between 20 and 30 years old with a hefty build and dark hair.
