SUDBURY -- Last Friday, it was a stabbing death in Sudbury's downtown core.

And Monday night, there was another murder in the city, this one in the Donovan-Flour Mill neighbourhood.

Officers were called to an address on Melvin Street, around 6 p.m. Nov. 8, where a man was found dead.

Police tape secures an apartment where the victim was found.

John Somerset is an Inspector with Greater Sudbury Police Service.

"At approximately 6 p.m., officers were called to check on the wellbeing of the occupants of an apartment on Melvin Street, and upon entering, they located an individual who was deceased and subsequently arrested the other occupant for murder," said Somerset.

CTV News has learned 33-year-old Kairo Chilton is charged with second-degree murder in the case.

Chilton made a brief court appearance Tuesday morning.

Police are not commenting on the murder victim’s injuries or if a weapon has been recovered.

"Unfortunately, this incident involved a case of domestic, I mean, of intimate partner violence. Therefore, we do not feel that there is any threat to the safety of the public," said Somerset.

Nicholas Bouley lives nearby on Melvin Street and heard yelling from the scene Monday night.

"I stepped outside and heard a bunch of screaming, like someone saying 'call the police, call the police.' So, I poked out my head and saw a bunch of ambulances coming up, and I started to walk up, and I had people and police telling me to leave the area immediately," said Bouley.

Bouley says the city’s second murder in just four days is unnerving.

"Uneasy, scared, and I feel bad for the victims," said Bouley.

When the accused appeared in bail court, she had white gauze bandaging wrapped around her right wrist.

Investigators confirm she was taken to hospital, treated, and released for a self-inflicted injury.

She remains in custody at the Sudbury jail with her next court date scheduled for Nov. 28.
