SUDBURY -- A couple from Greater Sudbury are the winners of the biggest ever 50/50 cash lottery draw at Health Sciences North.

Danny and Julie Moulton of Sudbury won $141,105 in the draw, a fundraiser that supports patient care at HSN. The announcement was made Tuesday on behalf of Health Sciences North Foundation, NEO Kids Foundation, Northern Cancer Foundation, and the HSN Volunteer Association.

“We have been purchasing tickets since September and for us it wasn’t a tough decision to buy in,” the couple is quoted as saying in a news release.

“We have used HSN many times as our oldest son has epilepsy and our youngest has type 1 diabetes. The care our sons receive at HSN has been excellent. It feels great to win, but it's good to know that the other half of the winnings support the hospital too.”

“It’s all still a bit of a shock.” Danny said.

“We never expected to win the 50/50, so we hadn’t really put much thought into it,” said Julie, when asked what they would do with the money. “The most likely thing is probably a snowmobile for the family, but we have some renovations we are thinking of and of course the kids’ education.”

“Maybe an Oculus VR headset?” said Alexei, the youngest of the family.

“I was so happy to call Danny and Julie yesterday, telling them they won over $141,000 was the highlight of my month,” Anthony Keating, president and CDO of Foundations and Volunteer Groups at HSN, said in the release.

“In October we were able to invest a portion of the 50/50 proceeds to purchase $150,000 in new equipment for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Breast Screening and Assessment Service at HSN. The HSN 50/50 is truly a win-win for our community.”

The November draw, live at www.hsn5050.ca, includes a guaranteed minimum jackpot of $9,999 and a chance to win an early-bird prize of $1,000 when tickets are purchased before 11:59 p.m. on Nov. 15.

Each month, half of the total ticket sales support patient care at HSN and the other half to one lucky winner.

"Funds raised will make a difference in the lives of those living with cancer, how the tiniest patients receive specialized pediatric care and ensuring equipment is in place when needed to provide quality patient care," the release said.

Residents across Ontario older than 18 can purchase tickets. Tickets for the November draw are available to purchase right now, with sales ending at 11:59 p.m. on Nov. 30. The jackpot winning ticket will be drawn Dec. 1 at 11 a.m. and posted online at www.hsn5050.ca.
