Environment Canada issued a severe thunderstorm warning Thursday for areas in and around Greater Sudbury, North Bay and Timmins.

“Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain,” Environment Canada said in the warning.

Wind gusts of up to 90 km/h are possible with “nickel to toonie size hail” beginning Thursday afternoon and early this evening.

“Severe thunderstorms are expected to develop and track through the region today,” the warning said.

“Strong wind gusts and large hail are the main threats.”

Residents should avoid water travel because of the possibility of sudden and violent wind gusts.

“Large hail can damage property and cause injury,” the warning said.

“Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles.”

To report severe weather, send an email to ONstorm@ec.gc.ca.
