It was an emotional day in a Sudbury courtroom Tuesday as a trial got under way in connection with a violent murder that happened back in 2015.

A 51-year-old man, Marcel Couillard, was found dead in his Donovan area apartment after a vicious attack and now 25-year-old Reginald Berard is on trial.

He is pleading not guilty to second-degree murder.

The jury heard Couillard was found dead in his apartment on Melvin Street in November of 2015.

A post-mortem examination revealed blunt force injuries to his head, likely caused by a closed fist, and 11 stab wounds.

A neighbour testified she saw the victim and accused drinking beer in the backyard the day of the murder.

In an interview shortly after the murder, the accused told police he doesn't remember the day of the murder, but says he heard voices the day before.

A close friend of the victim was in court on Tuesday and heard the gruesome details of the murder for the first time. He says it hurts, it's raw and it's shocking.

The trial is scheduled to last four weeks.
