Mining firm Vale is doubling its surface and underground exploration budget and has about 30 active projects involving more than a dozen drill rigs working in the Sudbury area.

Vale said in a news release Thursday that its exploration budget has gone from $22-million last year, to $42-million this year.

It says people in the city and surrounding area will notice airborne surveys being conducted by helicopters from mid-July through the end of September.

The company says it's renewing its focus on resource discovery and development to secure the long-term future of mines in the Sudbury basin.
