SUDBURY -- Sudbury Mayor Brian Bigger released a statement on Nov. 15 urging the city’s residents to follow the new public health guidelines as COVID-19 cases in the area have been on the rise over the last week.

Bigger cited his concern over this week’s projection models that show the province’s daily COVID-19 count could increase to as much as 6500 per day my mid-December.

“It is imperative that we all follow this directions from the expert in public health,” said Bigger in the statement.

“As we have all seen on the news, the projections for the spread of a second wave are very real and very much cause for worry.”

Bigger also praised the community effort and collective sacrifice during the spring that he said helped ensure a “summer that was nearly COVID free” and that he believes “set the example for other communities in Canada to follow.”

The statement then lists the ‘Yellow – Protect’ guidelines outlines by Public Health Sudbury and Districts earlier this week.

“I have ageing parents and young grandchildren – both who I am hoping to somehow see this Christmas.  I am sure this is a situation most of us find ourselves in,” he said.

“So let’s pull back on going out.  When we do go out – make it for a good reason and mask up.  Reschedule that dinner with friends.  Take a job by yourself instead of heading to the gym.  If you feel sick – don’t go to school or work.  Little things can add up – and I know we can do this.”

Bigger further echoed Medical Officer of Health Dr. Penny Sutcliffe’s position in that the rate of spread in Greater Sudbury ultimately depends on how each resident chooses to approach the restrictions associated with public health recommendations.

“We have a lot to look forward to, but we all need to be positive, make smart choices and choose the right path to get there,” he concluded.

“Be safe and be smart, Greater Sudbury.”
