SUDBURY -- A 29-year-old Sudbury man was caught driving impaired through downtown Elliot Lake on Sunday morning, the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police said Monday.

Police were conducting a patrol in the area when the man was pulled over because of the way he was driving.

"The driver was spoken to and a strong odour of alcoholic beverage was detected emanating from their breath," police said in a news release.

The man failed a roadside breath test and was arrested. His driver's license was suspended and the vehicle was towed and impounded. A search of the vehicle uncovered what police suspect is cocaine.

The Sudbury man is charged with impaired driving and drug possession and will be in the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on Nov. 3.

"The OPP remind motorists that no amount of alcohol or drug is acceptable to consume and drive," police said. "Report impaired drivers. Should you observe a suspected impaired driver, please dial 911 or contact the Ontario Provincial Police at 1-888-310-1122."
