SUDBURY -- After having to close its doors for a few months, the Lockerby branch of the Royal Canadian Legion was happy to celebrate Canada’s birthday Wednesday by hosting a picnic drive-thru.
“There’s no place to go, there is very little to do, we can celebrate in different ways and that’s what we’re trying to do," said Mary Michasiw, president of the Lockerby Legion 564.
"We’re part of the community (and) we want to continue doing the job that we’re here for and we want to make it fun for everybody.”
The legion met its goal of selling 300 meals for the celebration and with no events on the horizon, officials say money raised from the event will go toward paying utility bills and helping feed seniors in the community.
“We decided that we would help at risk seniors who are not mobile," Michasiw said. "We have a 160 meals being prepared here Tuesdays and Thursdays and delivered right to their homes and they are all home cooked right here on the spot.”
People in the drive-thru said they enjoy helping the legion when possible.
“We just wanted to support what the legion is doing for everybody in the community and it’s a great idea for supper tonight,” said one person in line.
“It's very important to support of legion," said another. "It supports the veterans that risked their lives everyday to keep us going and to live in this wonderful country, and my husband was a Second World War veteran.”
The next drive-thru event will be on July 12, when the legion will be hosting a blueberry pancake breakfast.
