Sudbury hospital CEO named chair of Ontario Hospital Association
Dominic Giroux, CEO of Health Sciences North and former president of Laurentian University in Sudbury, has been elected as the chair of the association representing Ontario's 154 public hospitals.
Giroux left Laurentian after eight years to run the Sudbury hospital and its research institute in 2017 and was the post-secondary school's longest-serving president and vice-chancellor.
He has been on the Ontario Hospital Association's board of directors since 2019 and was elected chair in a special meeting last week, the organization said in a news release.
"He served on numerous provincial health committees, was appointed to the Governing Council of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, served on the Drummond Commission on the Reform of Ontario’s Public Services, and chaired the board of the Northern Ontario School of Medicine," OHA said. "During the pandemic, he played a vital leadership role as co-chair of Ontario Health’s COVID-19 Northern Ontario Regional Steering Committee and on Ontario Health’s COVID-19 Health System Response Oversight Table."
The hospital has "eliminated a substantial deficit while sustaining patient satisfaction results above the average of Ontario teaching hospitals" under his leadership, the hospital said in his bio on the HSN website.
"Dominic is a well-respected leader with an outstanding ability to bring stakeholders together towards a common purpose and who continuously champions strategy and quality improvement," said Anthony Dale, OHA President and CEO.
"He demonstrates a deep commitment to sector-wide collaboration to improve the way the health system works and serves patients. Dominic will help guide the OHA as we strive to learn vital lessons from the pandemic and work to strengthen health services for Ontarians across the continuum of care."
Giroux replaces Sarah Downey, who began her new role as president and CEO of Centre for Addiction and Mental Health earlier this month after serving as president and CEO of Michael Garron Hospital in Toronto for seven years.
"As we all know, our hospitals and frontline health care workers are under a historic amount of strain," he is quoted as saying in a news release.
"The role played by the OHA and its fantastic team led by Anthony Dale has never been more critical. We have an incredibly experienced and talented board, and I look forward to us working together with the province to ensure our hospitals can continue to be there for the people of Ontario."
Giroux was appointed a second five-year team at HSN last year.
