SUDBURY -- In an effort to keep everyone fed during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Sudbury Food Bank is asking for monetary donations for its Cash for Cans community food drive.
The campaign launched on Monday with a goal of $250K.
In less than a week several people and companies have come forward offering donations towards the cause.
The Lougheed Foundation stepped forward with a $100,000K donation.
"During this crisis with the Coronavirus, it just seems to be a moment in time that we can really make a difference," said Geoffrey Lougheed. "That's why we made the donation that we made."
Lougheed says although their donation will be a big help, there is still more to raise in order to meet the need during this time.
"We decided to utilize a large portion, because there is a large need," he said. "I want to be really clear, whether someone gives $1 or $100 or $1000, whatever we can give makes a real difference in peoples lives."
Officials say that for every $1 donated, the food bank can buy $6 worth of food.
Doyle Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram Inc. also donated $10,000 earlier this week.
Donations can be made online at the foodbanks website or by cheque to the Sudbury Food Bank.
