Sudbury firefighters rescue kayakers in distress on Whitewater Lake
Two people in distress were rescued from Whitewater Lake on Monday afternoon.
In a Facebook post, the Sudbury Professional Firefighters Association said water rescue units from stations in Minnow Lake and Long Lake were dispatched to the scene with the platoon chief.
"On arrival, rescuers were informed that two kayakers were taking refuge on the south shore," the post said.
They were found because they were using the mobile What3words app, which allows rescuers to more easily pinpoint the location of people in need of rescue.
"As a result of windy conditions, the kayaks flipped and the parties could not make it back to the boat launch," the firefighters said.

"Rescuers quickly launched their boats, made contact with the kayakers and brought them back to shore. They were cold and wet but cleared medically by Sudbury EMS."
"Reminder to always inform friends and family of your plans, location and timelines when out adventuring the wilderness," the post added.
"Luckily for these two, concerned friends called 911 when they missed their time of arrival."
