Share

Unfortunately, the gas prices in Ontario are not a bad April Fool's Day joke, the increase is due to the rise in the consumer carbon levy, also known as the 'carbon tax.'

While the average price for a litre of gasoline in Ontario on April 1 is $1.583, according to Gas Buddy, most of the stations in the northeast are much higher.

These are the prices for regular gas available on the Gas Buddy website as of 10:30 a.m. Monday for the four major cities in the region:

Greater Sudbury

The highest price per litre in the Sudbury area is $1.599 posted by several Esso stations around town as well as Pioneer on the Kingsway.

Costco on the Kingsway has the lowest price at $1.539/L, as of 11 a.m.. CTVNewsNorthernOntario.ca confirmed.

Those travelling south on Highway 69, might want to wait to gas up at one of the First Nations stations.

Shawanaga Gas & Variety has regular gasoline for $1.418/L as of 10:50 a.m.

North Bay

Eagle's Nest, located just outside the city, has the lowest in the North Bay area with a price of $1.457 as of 9:45 a.m.

In town, Necessities on Couchie Industrial Roade has gas for $1.469/L as of Monday morning.

The most expensive gas in town at $1.659/L can be found at the Esso on Algonquin Avenue.

Sault Ste. Marie

The cheapest gas in Sault Ste. Marie is at the Rankin Gen7 on Gran Street, which had a price of $1.469/L as of 10:30 a.m. Monday, CTVNewsNorthernOntario.ca confirmed in a phone call to the station.

The most expensive gas in Sault Ste. Marie is at Shell on McNabb Street and Esso and Petro-Canada on Trunk Road with $1.633/L.

Timmins

In Timmins, the lowest gas price on Gas Buddy is showing $1.669/L at Petro-Canada in South Porcupine and Crevier in Porcupine.

Meanwhile, the highest is $1.709 at the three Esso and the Mobil.

The lowest price in Ontario is $1.279, Gas Buddy said.

While the gas price increases may be staggering, the federal government will be sending Ontarians the next quarterly instalment of the Canadian Carbon Rebate on April 15.

The amount received depends on the number of people in your household.

Singles get $140 each every three months, while couples get $210 and families of four receive $280.

The next payments will be received in July, October and January.

Correction

Earlier prices showing a high of $2.02/L were for premium fuel and not regular, prices have been corrected above.
