Environment Canada said peak snowfall rates could reach five to 10 cm/h leading to poor visibility due to heavy and blowing snow.
"The snow squall bands will likely shift from time to time, although amounts higher than 50 cm are possible if a band locks in for an extended period," the weather warning said Thursday.
"Road closures are possible given the expected poor travel conditions."
The agency is also advising people to postpone non-essential travel until conditions improve.
Thursday on CTV's 'Your Morning', meteorologist Kelsey McEwen said the Great Lakes and Georgian Bay have yet to freeze over.
"With warm water and a lack of ice on the lakes and bays, areas in the north can expect snow squall activity to persist," McEwen said.
"That may continue well into the New Year."
Driving hazards can arise quickly.
"Snow squalls cause weather conditions to vary considerably; changes from clear skies to heavy snow within just a few kilometres are common," Environment Canada said.
"Visibility will be suddenly reduced to near zero at times in heavy snow and blowing snow."
