Snow squall warning issued for Sault area; poor conditions on Hwy. 17 expected
A snow squall warning was issued Sunday in the Sault Ste. Marie area, including Agawa, Lake Superior Park, Searchmont, Montreal River Harbour and Batchawana Bay.
Environment Canada said snow squalls are expected to continue through Monday. Snowfall amounts could range from 20 to 40 cm.
“Locally heavy flurries and snow squalls off Lake Superior will continue today,” Environment Canada said in a statement.
“These flurries and snow squalls will last through Monday before gradually tapering to flurries.”
The statement said poor travel conditions along Highway 17 are expected during this time.
Snow squalls cause weather conditions to vary considerably; changing from clear skies to heavy snow within just a few kilometres are common. Visibility may be suddenly reduced to near zero at times in heavy snow and blowing snow.
“If visibility is reduced while driving, slow down, watch for tail lights ahead and be prepared to stop,” the statement said.
“Road closures are possible.”
