Smooth Rock Falls man charged with domestic violence after being shot at by police
A Smooth Rock Falls man, 36, is facing several charges related to intimate partner violence in northern Ontario following an incident last Friday.
Officers from the James Bay detachment were called to a domestic dispute on Elaine Street in Smooth Rock Falls around 8:30 p.m. Sept. 20, Ontario Provincial Police said in a news release.
The male suspect fled the home in a vehicle prior to the police's arrival.
"An interaction occurred between a responding officer and a person on Highway 11 near Moonbeam," OPP said.
"The highway was closed at that location for a period of time in order to facilitate the investigation. The province's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has invoked its mandate in relation to this incident."
Police tried to conduct a traffic stop on the highway and block the suspect's vehicle approximately five kilometres east of Moonbeam, SIU said.
"The man drove into a police vehicle. An officer discharged his firearm at the vehicle. The man fled on foot and was later located by police," the police watchdog said.
The suspect did not sustain any firearm injuries.
