SUDBURY -- Nipissing University said Wednesday night the COVID-19 outbreak at the school now involves 14 people, including one student in residence who has been moved to a 'quarantine suite.'

This after North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit reported six new COVID-19 cases Wednesday afternoon, bringing the total to 74 cases in the districts since the pandemic began. There has been one COVID-related death in the health unit's coverage area.

"All are associated with the community outbreak," the health unit said in a tweet. "We remain in the Green - Prevent level of Ontario's COVID-19 Response Framework."

The outbreak at the university was declared on Tuesday after six members of the school's athletic community tested positive for the disease. Public health officials said the six athletes live off campus, but have had interactions at the R.J. Surtees Student Athletics Centre gym and at social gatherings in the community.

All of the infected individuals are self-isolating, including the student in residence.

"The student has been moved to a quarantine suite. Nipissing is supporting the student in quarantine with access to food and any other supports they require to ensure their health and wellbeing. Facilities staff is conducting additional cleaning throughout the building, in addition to existing measures of thoroughly cleaning and sanitizing campus buildings on a daily basis," the university said in a statement.

Contract tracing has been completed and those who have been in close contact with the infected individuals have been notified.

As of 3 p.m. Wednesday, there are 14 active cases with the health unit's coverage area, 12 Nipissing District residents and two Parry Sound District residents. This month there have been 27 new cases of the disease, which accounts for more than 36% of the total cases since the pandemic began.
