SUDBURY -- An investigation is ongoing by the province's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) following a police-involved shooting of a man Saturday morning in Timmins.

According to the SIU, the incident started around 1:45 a.m. on Oct. 31.

Timmins Police officers were responding to a break and enter. Two men quickly got in the vehicle of a female driver upon officers arriving.

Officers were able to stop the vehicle in the area of Rae Avenue and Bannerman Avenue. A second officer assisted following a struggle with one of the men. After the man proceeded to shoot at the second officer, the first then discharged his firearm, striking the 31-year-old Timmins man.

He was first sent to a nearby hospital for treatment of serious injuries and was subsequently airlifted to another hospital.
