SUDBURY -- There has been another tragic incident on Manitoulin Island after a man was found dead Friday following a domestic incident in the Little Current area.

Provincial police were called to help the United Chiefs in Council of Manitoulin Police Service around 10:45 p.m. Nov. 27 after a man with a weapon had reportedly barricaded himself in a home on Aundeck Omni Kaning First Nation.

Officers contained the area and made attempts to contact the man, Ontario's Special Investigation Unit (SIU) said in a news release Saturday.

When officers entered the home, they found a 43-year-old man who had sustained a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Based on the preliminary information, the gunshot wound is believed to have been self-inflicted," the SIU said.

The SIU has taken over the investigation, as the civilian agency looks into cases where there has been death, serious injury or sexual assault allegations involving police.

"Three investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to the case," the SIU said.

This as an investigation is still underway into the tragic shooting deaths near Gore Bay on Nov. 19 that resulted in the death of a 28-year veteran member of the OPP, Const. Marc Hovingh, and a 60-year-old civilian, Gary Brohman. Hovingh was laid to rest in a ceremony in M'Chigeeng on Saturday.

In August, there was a 7-hour standoff with an armed man and police in Gore Bay as well.
