SIU investigates death of man in Elliot Lake, Ont., on Sunday

The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 46-year-old man Sunday in Elliot Lake.

The SIU investigates cases in which civilians are injured or killed in interactions with police.

In this case, Ontario Provincial Police responded to an incident around 12:30 at a residence near Westhill Road and Axmith Avenue.

Police had received reports of a break and enter and assault.

"Inside the residence, officers located a person of interest," the SIU said in a news release Monday.

"A struggle ensued as officers attempted to handcuff the man. The man was eventually placed into the cruiser."

But not long after the arrest, he went into "medical distress."

"He was removed from the cruiser and officers commenced first aid until paramedics arrived," the SIU said.

"The man was pronounced deceased in hospital."

Three investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to the case.
