SUDBURY -- Environment Canada says the severe thunderstorm that triggered weather alerts Saturday morning has been located on Manitoulin Island just before 3 p.m. and is moving southeast with continued risk for a tornado.
This severe thunderstorm was located near West Bay, M'Chigeeng First Nation on Manitoulin Island, at 2:47 p.m. and is moving southeast at 25 km/h.
Locations impacted include Five Mile Bay and Dokis.
Severe thunderstorm watches with risk of a tornado were issued by Environment Canada Saturday morning for these communities:
- French River
- Mattawa
- North Bay
- Powassan
- Temagami
- Temiskaming Shores
- West Nipissing
The severe thunderstorms capable of producing strong wind gusts near 90 km/h and hail near 2 cm in diameter are expected Saturday morning into the evening.
Large hail can cause damage to property and injury and strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles.
The Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.
