SUDBURY -- Temiskaming Ontario Provincial Police said Thursday afternoon that the public safety warning issued earlier in the day began when someone carrying an "edged weapon" was seen walking in downtown Cobalt.

"The individual left the scene and police were unable to speak with them," police said in a news release.

The release didn't say why OPP K9 units and the OPP helicopter were called to help with the search. CTV News has contacted police and hope to have an update later today.

Anyone with information regarding the incident or know the whereabouts of the individual is asked to call the OPP at 1-888-310-1122.

"The OPP reminds all members of the public to be aware of their personal safety at all times," the release said. "The OPP's website contains a number of useful resources, tips and links."
