School project leads to $5K donation to Sudbury's Elgin Street Mission
Three Grade 10 students from Lively District Secondary School recently did a research project on Sudbury’s Elgin Street Mission and their work has been chosen for a $5,000 donation to the charitable organization.
Each year, students in civics classes participate in an initiative to help them learn about community organizations and giving back.
This year, students did a project on the Mission, which they presented to their classmates in civics class. Their peers chose it to receive a $5,000 donation from the Youth Philanthropy Initiative.
"Throughout this project, we learned that there (are) many people in need in Sudbury not just the ones you see on the street every day," said Grade 10 student Kadin Broomhead.
“So we found a charity that helps with homelessness and poverty.”
"I think it will help me expand my growth like in the community, where I am," said Ian MacDonald, also a Grade 10 student.

The Elgin Street Missions said it's still seeing record numbers of people to feed every day. In the last month, it saw an increase of 1,000 meals.
"It's always great to get a phone call that you've got a great donation, but the bigger thing about that is we got it from such a young demographic," said Amanda Robichaud, executive director of the Mission.
“And I think it's really important for students to be part of what is happening in our community.”
School officials said students not only learn about various community organizations, they also gain an appreciation of the importance of civic engagement, volunteerism and giving back.
