SUDBURY -- Many students in northeastern Ontario are getting an extended weekend as school buses are cancelled Tuesday, Feb. 18 for several communities after a winter storm blew in overnight.

Sudbury Student Services Consortium has cancelled transportation in:

  • Sudbury District
  • Espanola
  • Massey
  • Manitoulin Island

Schools will remain open, so parents who bring their kids to school must pick them up at the end of the day.

Staff is expected to report to work.

Nipissing - Parry Sound Student Transportation Services has also cancelled bus service in:

  • North Bay 
  • West Nipissing
  • Mattawa 
  • Callander
  • Hwy 11 North of North Bay
  • Redbridge
  • Trout Lake
  • East Parry Sound North

The North East Tri-Board has cancelled the following routes:

  • Foleyet to Hwy 144
  • Gogama
  • Route L405
  • PARTIAL CANCELLATION OF F-314

Algoma-Huron Superior Transportation Services has cancelled transportation for:

  • North Shore area including Iron Bridge, Blind River, Elliot Lake, and Spanish & areas

Environment Canada has issued snowfall warnings for the following communities as heavy snow continues through Tuesday afternoon:

  • Elliot Lake
  • Greater Sudbury and vicinity
  • Blind River
  • Espanola 
  • Manitoulin Island
  • North Bay - Powassan - Mattawa
  • West Nipissing - French River
  • Sault Ste. Marie - St. Joseph Island
  • Searchmont

Moderate to heavy snow will continue to fall Tuesday morning and is expected to taper off in the afternoon into flurries

Total snowfall expected is 15 cm.

Travellers are advised to take extra time to get to their destination. Visibility could be reduced at times. If visibility is reduced while driving, slow down, watch for tail lights ahead and be prepared to stop.
