A fraud investigation involving the cashing of cheques in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., that began in August 2021, has resulted in the arrest of a 63-year-old woman at the border.

"Detectives in the fraud unit began investigating a report of three fraudulent cheques having been deposited into the accused’s bank account in late July of 2021," Sault Ste. Marie Police Service said in a news release Wednesday morning.

"The victim to whom the cheques belonged does not know the accused."

An arrest warrant was issued and the woman was taken into custody by the Canadian Border Services Agency on Nov. 2.

After receiving a 911 call from border services agents, city police were dispatched to make the arrest.

The accused is charged with fraud under $5,000.

She was released on a notice to appear with her next court date scheduled for Dec. 30.
