An 81-year-old man has been identified as the victim in a fatal crash involving three vehicles on Highway 17 north of Sault Ste. Marie.

Emergency crews were called to the scene near Haviland Shores Road in Goulais Township shortly after 3 p.m. Saturday, Ontario Provincial Police said in a news release.

Police said an investigation determined a northbound vehicle failed to negotiate a curve in the road and entered the southbound lane. The northbound vehicle hit one vehicle in the southbound lane before colliding head-on with a second vehicle.

Richard Harrison, 81, was a passenger of the second vehicle and was killed in the crash.

"The two drivers of the head on collision were taken to local hospital in Sault Ste. Marie with serious injuries," OPP said.

An investigation into the collision is continuing and an autopsy is scheduled for a later date.

The highway was closed for about eight hours following the crash.

No word on if any charges are pending.
