An afternoon on the golf course helped the Sault Ste. Marie Construction Association give a boost to some local youth who are pursuing post-secondary dreams.

The association held its 25th annual Harvey Buchan Memorial Golf Tournament at Crimson Ridge Golf Course on August 11 and proceeds helped the group provide bursaries to four local students, who are beginning their post-secondary education.

In a media release issued on Tuesday, the association said Alicia Baxter, Brian Benford Jr., Alyssa Grondin and Sarah Hemy were presented with bursaries this week in memory of Harvey Buchan.

Up until his passing in 1992, Harvey was a local construction industry leader and long-time supporter of the Sault Ste. Marie Construction Association. The local construction association has been giving away these educational bursaries since 1993.

“This is one of many examples of our members giving back to the community. Many of our members have been participating in or supporting this event for 25 years. This is yet another example of members of our association giving back to the community,” said Adam Pinder, SSMCA Executive Director.

The association said the bursaries are funded solely through the sales of hole sponsorships; which were completely sold out this year. Hole sponsors for this event included: 4 Refuel, Avery Construction, Bob Dionisi & Sons Floor and Window Covering, Commercial Concrete, Dynamic Roofing, Eaton, Elliott Engineering, Henderson Metal and Fabricating Co., HITE, Ideal Colour Contracting, Infrastructure Health and Safety Association, Jobst Construction, Lifebreath, UA Local 800, Maverick & Sons Exteriors and Consulting Services, Mike Moore Construction, Miramar Design Studio, OCP Construction Supplies, Ontario General Contractors Association, Permanent Electric, Pioneer Construction, S&T Group, Service Rentals & Sales, Soo Mill & Lumber Co., STEM Engineering, and Winmar.
