Sault Ste. Marie city council to receive update on the search for new CAO

Share

Sault Ste. Marie city council will spend part of its first meeting of 2024 discussing the ongoing search for a new Chief Administrative Officer (CAO).

Council will hear a report from Mayor Matthew Shoemaker, who is the Chair of the CAO Selection Committee. Current CAO Malcolm White is due to step down at the end of this month, and a search for a successor has been ongoing for months.

Council is scheduled to meet in closed session prior to Monday's meeting to discuss an "item concerning labour relations or employee negotiations." It is not clear what specifically will be discussed in the closed session, but Shoemaker's report concerning the CAO search will be put before council in open session.

In other business, council will discuss a proposal to bring the pay for part-time city employees to a 'living wage,' which would come at a cost of roughly $721,000. A staff report suggests a phased-in approach to adopting a living wage policy, if council decides to go that route.

A ‘Community Charging Infrastructure Plan’ will also be brought forward for council's approval.

The reports referenced in this article can be found in Jan. 8/24 city council meeting agenda.
