A 52-year-old man has been charged after a security guard in Sault Ste. Marie was attacked by a shoplifting suspect last week.

The incident took place around 3 p.m. at a business on Great Northern Road.

“Officers were dispatched to the business. Upon arrival, officers found the accused was already in (the) custody of security,” the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service said in a news release.

“An investigation revealed the accused had pushed and punched a security officer when confronted about leaving the business with items they had not paid for.”

The suspect was arrested and charged with robbery and failing to comply with a probation order.

The accused was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 16.

None of the accusations has been proven in court.
